What to do After an Auto Accident
Every time you get behind the wheel it is with understanding that a car accident could occur. Automotive wrecks can be horrifying, even at the slowest of speeds. While you likely have no intention of being involved in a crash, it is important to be prepared for one. Taking the following steps after a wreck can help ensure that the post accident time period does not bear any surprises. If you have additional questions about what to do following a wreck, be sure to contact your insurance agent.
Check for Injuries
The first thing that should be done immediately following a collision is an injury assessment for yourself, your passengers and those in other vehicles involved. If anyone requests an ambulance, or if it is obvious an ambulance should be summoned, call 911 right away.
Contact the Police
Even if there are no serious injuries it is a good idea to call the police following a car accident. This will give you a chance to file a police report, which will serve as valuable evidence for your insurance company while they process your claim. Having the police present will also help ensure nobody leaves the scene of the accident until all necessary information has been collected by all parties.
Snap some photos of the scene from all angles using your camera phone or another digital camera. If possible, collect witness statements as well. Also photograph other drivers' insurance cards and driver's licenses. All of this will help your insurance company determine fault and so that you can collect reimbursement for your car's damage.
Notify Your Insurance Company
Before leaving the accident scene be sure to contact your insurance company. They may have certain steps you need to take in order to file a claim with them. When it is convenient and legal to do so, take all of your collected evidence, including the police report, witness statements and any photographs, to your insurance company.
Find a Great Auto Body Repair Shop
Once you file a claim with your insurance company your agent will likely provide you with a list of prefered body shops that you could work with. But remember, you have the legal right to choose any body shop you wish and your insurance carrier must pay out on your policy. Seek out a shop that has decades of experience in the industry, as this will ensure you and your vehicle are properly cared for.
